Blueberry plants prefer the winter chills

090626NH055A CMYK A Colac district farmer says chilly weather is a blessing for the district’s blueberry crops this season.
Bob Shoebridge said growing blueberries required a mixture of patience, timing and a bit of help from Mother Nature.
Mr Shoebridge, who owns and manages Shoebridge Berry Farm at Gellibrand, said frosts were essential for growing blueberries.
But he said the frost’s timing was “a critical factor” in growing a successful crop.
“Most of the home fruits all need a bit of frost, and blueberries need frost to set the flowers,” he said.
