090902NH017 CMYK A chance meeting with members of a Federal Government department gave two Colac district farmers a chance to convey their views on an emissions trading scheme.
Beeac farmers Robert and Dawn Missen met members of the Department of Climate Change while on a Landcare trip to Tasmania.
Mrs Missen said the meeting proved invaluable as an opportunity to express their thoughts about agriculture’s inclusion in the scheme.
It was particularly wortwhile because most of the department’s members had no background in agriculture.
“We felt it was very worthwhile because we were able to talk to them about our concerns,” Mrs Missen said.
Mr Missen said the government was not recognising agriculture’s role in reducing emissions by carbon sequestration.
“The views expressed by our group were that agriculture needs to be better utilised as part of the solution,” Mr Missen said.
