091013NH112 Colac’s Harry Salmon has had a passion for cycling since he watched the Melbourne to Warrnambool race when he was a child.
Mr Salmon, 84, sent Herald Sun Tour cyclists on their way to Warrnambool when he fired the starter’s gun to launch the tour’s second stage.
“I thought it was a great honour to be asked,” he said.
Mr Salmon is a life member of the Colac Cycling Club.
His wife Wilma, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren watched him start stage two yesterday.
“The club decided to let me start the race at a meeting,” he said.
“It’s really good for cycling in Colac to start the race here.
“Cycling numbers in Colac are falling away so it might give it a boost.”
Mr Salmon found a passion for cycling in 1930 when his father took him and his brothers to watch the Melbourne to Warrnambool.
“I’ve also introduced my grandchildren to the sport,” he said.
