Fighting knock and capitulation save Irrewarra
By Matt Murnane • Oct 19th, 2009 • Category: Cricket, SportA fighting half century from Division Two all-rounder Shannon O’Brien and a trademark Colac West batting collapse has helped Irrewarra survive Saturday’s season opener.
The Division One powerhouse was in trouble at the beginning of both innings in the 40-over one-dayer at Irrewarra but used its class and experience to close out a young West outfit in the latter overs.
O’Brien put his hand up for a permanent promotion with a gutsy 57 as the home side rushed to a 25-run win after restricting last season’s wooden-spooners to 115 in reply to Irrewarra’s 9-140.
But Irrewarra captain Kane Quickensted admitted the win was far from the ideal start he was hoping for his debut as Division One captain.
After electing to bat, last season’s grand finalist was reeling at 4-24 early in its innings, battling a slow outfield.
The young West unit was lively in the field and new skipper Dale Menzies, 4-24 off 8 overs, and Robert Thresher, 2-32 off 8, harnessed the energy to put Irrewarra on the back foot early with two quick wickets each.
