Colac police have called for people to be responsible with weapons after two separate incidents involving a shotgun and stolen knives at the weekend.
Police responded to altercations at a Colac district party and a Colac supermarket.
Detective Senior Constable Chris Potter of Colac’s Crime Investigation Unit said a man produced a 12-gauge sawn-off shotgun at a private party near Camperdown on Friday night.
“A fight ensued and a shotgun was produced and discharged,” Det Potter said.
“A shot was just fired in the air so there were no threats and no one was endangered by that,” he said.
Det Potter said police arrested and charged a 31-year-old Camperdown man.
“He was charged with possession of a pistol, being an unlicensed firearm holder and associated minor offences.
“He will appear in court at Colac at a later date.”
Det Potter said the man’s behaviour was “foolish”.
“The consequences are severe and the potential for serious injury or death is always there,” he said.
Det Potter said incidents involving firearms were uncommon in the Colac district.
