Colac Show thriving

The 2009 Colac Show ended with a blue heeler named Red jumping more than two metres high in a dog-jumping contest yesterday.
Red, from Birregurra, took out the under 60-centimetre high category of the show’s Dog High Jumping Competition, jumping 2.2 metres.
Colac and District Pastoral and Agricultural Society president Hugh Riches said the show was a success.
“It’s been a good solid show,” he said.
“It hasn’t been a record-breaking show, as I think the weather put some people off, particularly on Saturday afternoon as it was quite hot down there, but all in all it’s been a success.”
Mr Riches said he could not guess how many people entered the gates throughout the show’s three day period.
“I wouldn’t like to put a number on it as I’m really not sure,” he said.
“Having said that, I think there were a few more paying customers this year, rather than those using vouchers so I’m pretty sure we were up on paying entries.”
Mr Riches said the Saturday night fireworks display was a highlight.
“They really were excellent,” he said.
“I found out we even had people come down from Ballarat to watch them so that is saying something.
“I think we have been having a fireworks display for about 40 years now and it is always something to look forward to.”
Mr Riches said all agricultural events were well patronised.
“The horse events were particularly well patronised, as was the dog-jumping show and the pet parade,” he said.
Members of the P and A will return to the showgrounds today
for a working-bee and clean-up day.
“We’ll definitely be getting together soon and throwing around ideas for next year and what we might do differently,” he said.
“But we are all fairly tired now and are all looking forward to a good night’s rest.”
