Government officials were at the Colac Show this year keeping children safe.
Inspectors from the Department of Consumer Affairs were at the show checking the contents of show bags.
Inspectors Gary Jennings and Philip Hunter checked toys and novelties in more than 300 different show bags to ensure the contents complied with Victorian product safety standards.
“We do this to protect the youth, particularly those who may be vulnerable,” Mr Hunter said.
“A lot of the items in the bags or sold from the stalls can cause serious injury or death, because some of the parts are too small, too sharp or just not safe.”
Mr Hunter said he and Mr Jennings kept an eye out for toy guns, which were sold in show bags as well as from individual stores.
“The toy gun line is an area we pay particular attention to,” Mr Hunter said.
“We look at everything from the size of the bullets, to how fast they can be shot out of the gun and whether they are sharp or not,” he said.
“In the past we have confiscated parts that could puncture an eye, could be choked on or have caused a serious injury.”
Mr Hunter and Mr Jennings carry a tube, which is the same size as a young child’s oesophagus, to test whether small products are safe.
The inspectors also look for toys containing toxic chemicals.
“We hope the message gets out there that these products are unsafe and we will continue to do our best ensuring the show is a happy and safe time for everyone,” Mr Hunter said.
