Winchelsea fails in close contest

Winchelsea’s Stewy Williams’ impressive rink win against Camperdown Golf’s in-form bowler Craig Skene could not help his team defeat Golf at the weekend.
Skene’s purple patch appears to have ended after Williams collected a crucial rink win in the Corangamite bowls’ Division One match.
But the rink was not enough to get Winchelsea over the line, losing to Golf by nine shots, 94-85.
Winchelsea president Peter McConachy said Golf had the jump on his team all day.
“It was a very close match and all day there was only two or three shots in it,” Mr McConachy said.
“We couldn’t quite get in front and probably their home green was the difference in the end,” he said.
“It was only the last couple of ends when they got away but overall we weren’t good enough to win it.”
Mr McConachy said Williams had a nine-shot lead against Skene during his match.
“He did very well to win against Craig. He led all day and it was very close at the end,” he said.
Golf chairman of selectors Lud Gungl said the narrow win against Winchelsea left the race for finals open.
“They’ve been bowling extremely well and we knew it would be hard,” Gungl said.
“It was pretty close to level at lunch and we just got our noses in front later in the game,” he said.
“The boys knuckled down and got us over the line when we needed it.
“It looks like it’s a six-horse race to the finals and you can’t afford to drop games at the moment because it’s very tight.”
Gungl said Winchelsea proved to be formidable in the lead up to the second half of the season.
“I think this year they’ve got their green up and running whereas last year they were bowling away from home a lot,” he said.
TUSSLE: Winchelsea’s Stewy Williams’ rink defeated Camperdown Golf’s Craig Skene’s rink But Williams’ rink win was not enough to overcome Golf’s overall efforts on the day, with Golf winning the match by nine shots, 94-85, at Camperdown on Saturday.
