“I think generally people have very increased awareness, although there is a risk people will become complacent if they are warned too many times and nothing happens.” Elizabeth Scarrott, Colac

“I’m originally from the Blue Mountains in NSW where I was a member of the local fire brigade, so I know what to do and what not to do. Being from the bush, I grew up with a high level of fire awareness.” Caine McMahon, Warncoort
“My son in law takes care of our fire plan. We do keep the gutters clear and keep the place tidy in case.” Annie Cobley, Barwon Downs
“I’m from the bush, so fire safety has been bred into me. I think there a lot of unprepared people living in areas they shouldn’t, and they don’t realise the danger.” Chris Sheedy, Colac
“I live in town, so I don’t have to worry too much. But what happened has made everyone very aware of the potential dangers.” Lila Sutherland, Colac
“Black Saturday made everyone realise that the scale of the fire was far greater than they could have imagined. It took everyone by surprise. I certainly have a fire plan now.” Mike Edwards, Barongarook
