Film will benefit community radio
By Ben Martin • Feb 10th, 2010 • Category: NewsA Colac community radio station will host a movie screening to raise money for the station.
OCR FM will present a screening of the feature film adaptation of 1990 musical Bran Nue Dae at Colac Otway Performing Arts and Cultural Centre on Friday, February 19.
OCR FM’s Lila Hester said the station’s committee chose Bran Nue Dae because it reflected community radio’s diversity.
“A lot of Bran Nue Dae was filmed in Broome, where there is a lot multicultural people living together,” she said.
“Since community radio is a mix of different people with different tastes it seemed like an appropriate match.
“You’ll be humming along to the tunes, tapping your feet to the beat and come out feeling like you’ve had a good night.”
Bran Nue Dae follows the story of Willie, played by Rocky McKenzie, a rebellious teenage boy who escapes a Catholic mission in Perth to return to his home at Broome.
Mrs Hester said the screening would raise money for the station’s general needs.
“It’s just to keep community radio bringing community news to Colac,” she said.
Mrs Hester said the fundraiser would be the first of many, because OCR FM hopes to get more exposure.
“Now that we’ve got a committee that looks like it will be around for a while there’s a big push to get the station recognised in, not just Colac, but the wider listening area,” she said.
“We’ve got grounds for equipment and we want to make the most of those.
“There’s no point having all the equipment if no one’s listening.”
Tickets for the screening are available at COPACC for $15.
