Colac’s A Grade basketballers have proven themselves as some of the best in the region.
Colac men’s and women’s senior representative sides came away undefeated after competing in a regional round robin tournament at Colac’s Bluewater Fitness Centre on Sunday.
The women’s squad, made up predominantly of the Colac’s top junior players, kicked off the day against Timboon.
After an impressive start to the clash, the Kookas shot out to a 19-point lead heading into the first break, led by young-gun Edwina Parker, 11 points.
Not to be outdone, the Timboon squad hit back in the second half but it was too little, too late as Colac held off Timboon to come away 42-34 winner.
In the men’s first match against Timboon, Colac tall forward Brendan Dell helped the home side find its feet, netting 14 points.
After setting up a 30-point lead at half-time, the Kookas cruised through the second half to win 63-31.
Colac’s women’s squad had a run for its money in its second clash, this time against Terang.
A tenacious Terang line-up gave its all against the young Colac team, and Emma Hillman stepped up when the team needed her.
Hillman scored 16 points for the match to obliterate any chance of Terang coming away with the win, and Colac won its second match 45-41.
In the men’s second clash against their Terang counterparts, Colac’s men failed to get the early jump they made against Timboon.
Terang’s bigger-bodied players made it tough, but dangerous guard Matt Lucas helped his side break away to a 15-point lead late in the first half.
Despite a second-half fight-back from Terang, Colac halted a late charge to win the 54-40 clash.
Terang finished second in the men’s competition after downing Timboon 56-43 while Timboon’s women were second-best on the day and defeated Terang’s women 33-25.
